Managerial Economics and Business Strategy and Nursing Today

Managerial Economics and Business Strategy

Author: Michael Bay

Baye’s Managerial Economics and Business Strategy remains the best-selling managerial economics textbook. It was the first textbook to provide students with the tools from intermediate microeconomics, game theory, and industrial organization to make sound managerial decisions. These include enhanced pedagogical features such as learning objectives, new and updated business applications, additional end-of-chapter problems, better prose, and updated data. Additionally, the Time Warner Case, introduced last edition, is strengthened in the Sixth Edition with detailed teaching notes and nine additional end-of-case problems.

This book is the third edition of a popular issues and trends text. The editors have revised and updated the chapters and added several new chapters -- ""Health in the Community: Nursing's Role"" and ""Alternative and Complementary Health Care."" In response to the demand for more management content, the editors include a chapter entitled ""Group Process and Team Building."" The editors state that the purpose is to help the student who is about to graduate become aware of the transition process involved in coping with the realities of a rapidly changing practice environment. The text is for use in the typical transition course offered in the senior or final year of a pre-licensure registered nurse program. Certainly such a text is needed to help students prepare for their entrance into the practice arena. The primary audience is students in Associate Degree, Diploma, or Baccalaureate programs who are in the final phases of their educational care ers. The editors provide an overview of many topics, and this book could also be used as a reference for the new graduate who is faced with a multiplicity of transition issues. However, an in-depth study of any one issue would require further reading in other sources such as journal articles or other texts. The conversational writing style makes this book exceptionally easy to read. Important points are highlighted and thoughtful questions and exercises are included. Cartoons add a humorous approach to illustrating the content. The Internet references provide on-line sites for further exploration of issues, and the web site, when activated, will provide faculty with frequent updates of content. Currently, faculty receive updates via asemi-annual newsletter. This updated text will be quite useful in transitions/issues and trends courses for pre-licensure students.

Reviewer: Jayalakshmi Jambunathan, PhD, MSN, MA, BSN, BSc (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description: The authors of this book describe the problems and opportunities faced by professional nurses and delineate the practical skills essential for success. This is an updated edition; the previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the graduating nurse with practical guidelines regarding the transition from student to entry level practice nurse. This appears to be a worthy objective in light of the fact that nursing education and the resultant transition process of a graduating nurse is impacted by a dynamic and technologically-oriented healthcare delivery system. This is a much needed book. The authors have met the objective have by updating each chapter as well as providing more information on delegation and management, and adding a chapter on nursing informatics. This information is essential to assist the student to anticipate and face the challenges encountered in an ever changing practice setting.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for a student in the final semester of course work. The student needs to understand and feel comfortable in the rapid role transition that is required.
Features: The authors provide an overall description of the nursing profession from historical events that influenced nursing to the present day and the legal, ethical, political, and job related issues encountered by the practicing nurse. The authors also provide career advancement tools such as time management, writing resumes, interviewing tips, employee benefits, and self-strategies. Most chapters are well done, especially the chapters on nursing informatics, delegation and management, leadership, and complementary and alternative therapies. Other methods that make the book informative include practical applications, critical thinking boxes, focus on the use of the Internet, and a question approach. Unique features include: contact information and web sites, national organization and state organization appendixes. It would be beneficial to add chapters on cultural diversity and spirituality and health care because of the influx of ethnically diverse populations who may not conform to the accepted cultural beliefs and norms. The chapter on using research in practice needs more examples and illustrations for the practicing nurse, because of the significance of evidence-based practice. A summary would be useful at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: This is a much needed book for a graduating nurse, who may not have the knowledge or the proficiency to enter into practice as an independent nurse. The book is simple in its reading style, easy to understand, and provides a wealth of timely information on nursing management and leadership in both hospital and c ommunity settings.
